Every morning my students recite the Cougar Creed which contains the line, "I will press towards academic excellence and personal honesty to better myself, my school, and my community."
That is what they do every day.
We have a pretty unique classroom.
Our students are in 7th and 8th grade. I co-teach math, science, literacy and social studies with a fantastic special education teacher, Ms. Schwartz. Our inclusion classroom of 30 is made up of diverse learners and we strive to vary our teaching strategies to meet their needs and make our instruction engaging and rigorous. Our school is in a low-income community on the south side of Chicago. Each day, our middle schoolers are up against adversity and they push to make their education a top priority.
My Project
Our principal has worked tirelessly all year to find funding that will provide resources to get our students college-ready and now it's time for us to pitch in. She recently won a grant to provide a classroom set of Google Chromebooks for our students! We have access to an incredible online science curriculum, and a math and reading program that provides interactive modules and videos. Students can work at their own pace and read passages at their own reading level while still working on grade level content to get them up to speed. A pair of headphones for each student would allow them to engage in all of the great resources we have been blessed with!
Because we have such a wide range of learners in our room, my co-teacher and I differentiate our instruction to make sure that each student is working at their level and not given work that is too hard or too easy.
We work with small groups of 3-4 students at a time to target our instruction. Providing a pair of headphones for each Chromebook would allow our students to engage independently in curriculum with that same precision. We can't let these valuable resources go to waste!
Thanks!
