This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Can we recycle this?" I hear it everyday. My students love to recycle...anything. Paper, plastic, you name it. Our students do not let us throw anything away. "Don't you want to recycle that?" they say.
Our public elementary school is in a large urban setting, where over 98% of the students receive free or reduced lunch.
Students and their third grade teacher noticed that there was a need for a recycling program after looking at the paper being thrown away in the classroom as well as the packaging from breakfast and lunch. Two years ago, it started with 1 teacher and a couple of her students recycling newspapers that were used in the classroom. The program has expanded school wide, including kindergarten through fifth graders with a recycling team that recycles paper, ink cartridges, glass, and plastic containers from breakfast, lunch and the fresh fruit and vegetable program.
My Project
The recycling program has become so large that we need a better way to store our recyclables before they are picked up. The storage containers and liners will enable us to store our recyclable items in an area free of garbage. Our city does not have curbside recycling, so if we don't model at school how to recycle, our students will not know how to help reduce the amount of garbage going into landfills.
Just like the new movie FURRY VENGEANCE is advocating that we save our wilderness, our school community is committed to protecting our environment by reducing the amount of our garbage that gets taken to a landfill.
Helping our students to be stewards of their environment at an early age, will train them to continue this practice into adulthood. Less garbage in landfills, more wilderness, clean air...EVERYONE WINS!
