My Students
Do you remember reading a word and you had no clue what it meant, and your teacher (or Mom) told you to go "look it up"?
While my students are located in a beautiful new school, because of budget cutbacks, our instructional materials are limited.
This includes dictionaries. My second grade students need dictionaries to help aid in their learning. Right now, we have one small paperback dictionary which is not even appropriate for this age!
My Project
Our younger students need to learn dictionary skills. Because they are still developing their reading skills, one size does not fit all when it comes to dictionaries. The Scholastic Children's Dictionary fits this bill. Not only is it written with second grade readers in mind, it has illustrations and words applicable to their learning. I have also added a Mandarin Chinese and Egyptian dictionary to this project since part of our year, we will be immersed in these two cultures. What better way to teach dictionary skills than to show students that its not simply English words that have a dictionary. What a great way for students to explore other cultures through their own language!
Won't you please help us out?
My students desperately need this resource in our classroom to help with their learning - in all subject areas! Imagine having someone tell you to "go look it up" and there is nothing there! Having these references can really make a difference in our classroom!
