My project needs a basic, reliable, monotone digital laser photocopier for my science class and a few toner cartridges to go with it.

I teach junior high science in a rural district in southwest Mississippi. The majority of my kids are from low-income households with limited resources. Unfortunately, it is often the basics such as notebook paper that end up as a low priority in the household budget.

Science can be a difficult subject, and that difficulty is compounded when the students don't have the supplies they need to master the subject matter. Thanks to the wonderful donors here at DonorsChoose, I have an ample supply of photocopy paper for the year. Unfortunately, I am now faced with the most dreaded of situations a teacher can face: an unreliable photocopier that likes to go on the blink for days on end. When this happens, I am unable to supply my students with the diagrams they need to understand such concepts as food webs, atomic structures, and the circulation route of blood through the heart. I can talk about these things all day long and some students will be able to grasp the concept, but most need something concrete to look at in order for that light bulb of understanding to come on. This is where your support, Dear Donor, can make all the difference in the world!

The solution to this situation is simple: a small, monotone photocopier in the classroom that I can use to make whatever copies of handouts, diagrams, tests, homework assignments, notes, etc., that my students need in order to light up their comprehension bulbs. I'm not looking for anything fancy, just heavy-duty enough to handle the load of materials for 100+ students. Monotone is fine also - I teach junior high: these kids love to color so we'll add the color to the copies ourselves.

With this resource at my disposal, I don't have to tell any students that I can't provide the information they need to understand the lesson because the photocopier for all of the teachers at the school is on the blink yet again. With this tool at hand, I can open up the world of science to my kids through graphs, diagrams, and the written word, supplementing their general abilities in other classes in the process (graphs in math, diagrams in social studies, reading and writing skills in language arts). Funding this project is a gift to my kids that will keep on giving for years to come. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.
