Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students LOVE to explore history. Unfortunately, they are stuck with outdated technology, crowded classrooms, and numerous other challenges. From singing World War I patriotic songs to debating the American dream, my students find meaningful connections in the study of the past.
My school is in the heart of the city and features one of the most diverse student bodies in all of the district.
Many of my students' families are 1st or 2nd generation immigrants, coming from areas around the world such as Mexico, Cambodia, India, Vietnam, Nigeria, and many others. The overwhelming majority of students are classified Title I (socioeconomically disadvantaged), and although many were born outside of the United States, many have never left the neighborhood in which they grew up.
Working at a school with such a rich cultural diversity as mine, I have always felt that it is extremely important to build bridges between communities and have student critically examine the issues facing the world today.
My Project
The Samsung tablet I am requesting will be an invaluable learning tool for my classroom community. I would utilize this device by loading various primary sources such as labor union songs of the industrial revolution, clips of the Simpson's exploring issues connecting to immigration, civil rights speeches, and countless other resources. My goal will be to use this resource to create a mobile learning station that students will be able to access during class activities. With the large class sizes, it is extremely difficult to provide individual students with the attention they deserve. By creating a multimedia center, I will be able to engage individual learners in a more dynamic way while also providing an opportunity for students to discover history through exploration rather than just listening to a teacher.
Students are naturally drawn to new technology and it is important that teachers find ways to integrate this technology into their classroom.
This device will allow the shy student to exploring class content at their own pace, engage the student who was lost during lecture, and countless other possibilities.
