Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students' interests include, but are not limited to, collecting crystals, sketching, playing sports, watching anime, and cooking/baking. They help their families with work on the weekend by selling goods at the swap meet, cleaning houses, and farming produce to sell at the local market. My students have such rich lives, and I want them to access their endless potential by creating a love for reading.
I am moved by my students' resilience.
I teach in a low-income neighborhood where just getting their child to school can be a daily challenge for families. With before and after school care, some of my students are on campus 7am-6pm. Think about how long that is away from your home and family everyday; imagine what that feels like. I practice daily gratitude with my students because research shows it produces many positive mental and physical benefits. At least once a week, a student shares that the "good thing" about today is that she/he is at school or in my class.
My Project
I am an intervention teacher, so I teach foundational reading skills to my students. A large part of obtaining buy-in from students (resulting in sustained classroom focus and motivation) is having materials that will excite them and relate to their interests. These books will entertain students, develop their drawing and cooking skills, satiate their curiosity about crystals, and become the focus of our small-group book clubs!
The books I am requesting will be added to my classroom library for students to check out and read in class.
They can read at the before/after school program, during lunch, at home; whenever they want to re-enter that world!
Before DonorsChoose, I had been using my yearly budget to purchase books that I know my students will love. Help me deepen their interests and enrich their reading experiences!
