Sometimes students come to class unprepared. It just happens. They may have lost their pen somewhere during the day, or run out of paper, or just had a hard time getting to school after making breakfast and dropping off younger siblings. Often, teachers kick students out of class if they are without supplies. My teaching philosophy is different. I believe students who are at school and willing to learn should be allowed in - even if it means they have to scrounge around for a writing utensil.
I would like to create a "library" of school supplies to lend my students while they are in my class. They will be able to exchange their IDs for pens or pencils and in turn, not be punished for being at school unprepared. This approach is more welcoming to students and will help them see school as a positive place.
