Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school. Many students get free or reduced-price lunch. The majority of students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds and may only get the two meals a day they receive at the high school. The majority are also English Language Learners. My students are filled with personality and many have experienced hardship no sixteen-year-old should have experienced. Unfortunately, my students can barely bring in the basics they need to be a prepared learner in class (paper, pencil). But what they do bring is enthusiasm, positive attitude, and imagination. Our campus has a strong sense of community, we really are a family. We even have a supper program where students can eat dinner after school for free.

My Project

Next school year I am going to start teaching a new course, IB Environmental Systems and Societies. I am so excited to teach this new class and I have already been brainstorming ideas on how I can elevate the course and really make it come to life. I have a vision that the students taking this course will need to better understand and appreciate the environment. What better way than to take the students outside?

I am planning on taking my class outdoors several times a month to take soil samples around the school.

They will need a camp chair to take with them so that they are comfortable. In another project, our class got a class set of clip boards, which greatly helped my students' mobility outside. The students said a foldable and compact chair would be an excellent addition to the class so they could easily pack in their belongings and move around school. The camp chairs will also be used when we go on field trips to take water quality samples. Later in the school year they will need to conduct their own field research project and they will need this chair as well.

The MacroLens is a great tool for the students to take out into the field to look at particulate soil size, insects, and other macroinvertebrates they may find. Any time the students are going out into the field whether it is on a field trip hike or around the school campus I always want them to be curious about what they find and they will use field guides to identify organisms.

Lastly, the water bath will be needed for higher level labs that require a specific temperature.
