My Students

I teach a loving, energetic group of at-risk HS students at an urban Title I school in the heart of Manhattan. Many are English Language Learners, have special needs, or are safety transfer students who struggle because the education has failed to provide them with equal opportunities to succeed.

My students this year are either in a visual art class for the first time ever, or are students in a geometry and algebra course, all of which have been fully remote with me for over a year.

Through the challenges of remote learning, these students have stayed so positive, worked so hard, and are trying their best to appreciate school and take their education seriously.

This year is particularly challenging for many students as many of them fell ill during the spring and summer, had parents fall ill, and lost family members due to the virus. Not to mention, many had very difficult living situations that they have been coping with being quarantined in for the past few months. Despite these challenges though, my students have remained resilient and positive. They continue to exceed my expectations and make me proud.

My Project

Our yearbook committee works diligently every year to produce a yearbook and senior video that accurately captures the memories of ALL of the students in our graduating class over their four years in high school. This club usually has so much fun running around school taking pictures and capturing the memories. However, upon speaking to the current juniors (class of 2022), they have already vocalized a lot of stress and anxiety about how to make their yearbook and senior video after nearly two years of their high school career was spent fully remote.

This additional camera is a way to help the class of 2022 spend their senior year capturing memories and moments that they have missed out on the past two years by being fully remote.

In a school where they are not allowed to have their phones to capture the tiny moments, I want to provide them with enough camera equipment to make sure none of the fun goes undocumented. This camera will be a huge help in capturing memories and allowing next year's seniors the opportunity to make a yearbook and video full of memories as they have a long awaited reunion back in the building in the fall.
