Help me give my students a means to self-soothing! Each classroom desk/space will receive a calming strip for students to ground themselves in the moment, in the classroom, and in the lesson.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Calming strips are fidget tools that don't move. This allows students to discreetly self-soothe so they can focus better on the lesson and classroom activities. Immobile fidgets reduce distraction in the classroom - they can reduce disruptive behaviors by allowing students to self-stimulate, and they create less disruption as a tool that can't be thrown in the air, passed around to friends, or used inappropriately. They aren't the latest shiny new distraction in the classroom because each student will have their own.
Everyone has silent struggles, children included.
We never know what our peers are experiencing outside of school; many individuals have stressful home and community environments. Not everyone is comfortable seeking outside help, and that's okay. These calm strips will be available to everyone because everyone needs help self-soothing sometimes. It can help students focus better and self-regulate more effectively.
