Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students are creative, playful, and inventive spirits. However, there are many of them who struggle with feeling calm and focused. Some of these students are on the autism spectrum. Some have sensory processing disorder, meaning that their senses are either over-sensitive or under-sensitive, affecting their emotions and behavior, as well as their academics.
I have noticed that many behavior issues are actually sensory issues.
Students who are unfocused, can't stop talking or making sounds, or wander the room frequently have unmet sensory needs. When I have used sensory supports in the past, many behavior issues went away. Unfortunately, there is not enough to go around, so I am going to try to expand my collection of sensory tools in order to help as many students as possible.
Students LOVE the kick bands and it really helps my "bouncier" students feel calm and focused. Play-dough is a great tool for helping students get out of their heads and into the physical world, and it also helps build hand strength for students would are struggling with tasks like holding pencils and cutting with scissors.
