Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Pre and post pandemic, our district has really focused on PBIS and SEL initiatives. My special needs students include students with past trauma, behavioral issues, bilingual learners, and students who require extra support across all outlets. All of my students benefit from support with their social emotional learning and regulating their emotions. By having resources to help them, they will be able to refocus and be ready to succeed in the classroom. I would like to build a space where students have the flexibility to explore their emotions while being positively reinforced when appropriate. Through the use of wobble cushions, stuffed animals and air tents, I can create a calming environment where students can read, complete tasks, or simply take a break and relax. Using the vending machine approach, students will earn tokens to buy prizes including sensory toys, fidgets, and stickers. These prizes will also act as a self regulating tool within their classrooms and day to day life. By utilizing the items in my project, I will not only adhere to what my students need for their social, emotional and mental health but I will foster academic renewal. By creating this positive environment, my special education students will be motivated and encouraged to do their best. My overall goal for this project is to allow my students their own space to grow as a learner and be the best addition to our school community.
