This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Students are more and more in need of a calm, safe space to reset within the classroom. Each year it seems my students have a stronger need for a calm corner. I want to provide an improved space in my classroom for students who are deregulated and need to deescalate. It is important for me to keep students in my classroom for this rather than removing them.
This project will help provide my students and I with new tools to calm down.
The sensory objects and weighted lap pads along with the guided breathing light provide an opportunity for students to independently find what they need to calm down and get ready to learn again. Each student is different, so I need a variety of objects and tools in the space within my classroom. Mental health matters and I want to let my students know that by teaching them how to use these tools, they can be successful learners.
