My Students
My students are K-6th grade students that are at-risk for social-emotional skills. I have the pleasure of getting to know each student individually and work with them through their journey of life within the school setting. I have the opportunity to empower my students with tools and strategies to help them be successful not only in school but also in life. The students I work with come from all different backgrounds and need to be given the opportunity to be given a chance. When an educator takes the time to build relationships with their students it is amazing to see how much of a difference that can make in a students' success.
I provide social-emotional supports and learning for students in various forms throughout the school day in order to help them be successful in all areas of growth.
My Project
With the shift of education focusing not only on academics but also on social-emotional learning our school is trying to create a calming room for all students to access. Much of my focus the past year and a half, as a behavior specialist, has shifted due to the pandemic. I have worked with more students that have been dealing with a lot of trauma. We know that if students' social-emotional well being isn't addressed on a daily basis then they aren't available to learn at their fullest potential. Students will be able to access this classroom to de-escalate when they are having a tough time. Our goal is to have resources and staff members to help them refocus and understand how to better self-regulate in order to be available for learning.
Our school has adopted a philosophy on restorative justice when working with students in the area of behavior and understanding the "why" students react the way the do in situations.
This calming room will be a safe place students can go to decompress. Then they can reflect on the "what happened" and "what I can do next time".
