My Students

The Transition Program in our school district assists 18-21-year-old students in special education who are in need of comprehensive transition services. The goal of the Transition Program is to increase the students' ability to live independently, navigate the community safely, and positively contribute to their community. Instruction occurs in a variety of settings, including school, community, and volunteer experience placements.

Students in our program have a variety of disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders, intellectual and learning disabilities, communication and speech delays, and other health impairments.

A majority of the students receive federal support and qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Often, our students come from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds and do not have the resources to support activities at school and in the community.

My Project

I would like to continue to support the social-emotional needs of my students with something they all seem to enjoy, crafts. We are in desperate need of various materials that they could build, discover and craft items that make them feel calm, happy and at ease. I would love to provide my students with diamond painting and loom kits for them to use during times of stress. These activities can be used during free choice times as well as during times when a student is feeling stressed or overwhelmed. I want my students to connect the beauty of art with the world around them. They are a creative and energetic group of people that want to build and explore through crafts. The student learning outcomes for this project is for students to understand that creativity and art can help them connect to a world of calmness through creation and discovery.
