it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Music classes can be a loud environment, and students sometimes struggle with overstimulation or emotional regulation. A calm-down corner offers a designated space where they can take a break, use calming strategies, and regain their composure.
A calming corner is a practical and empathetic approach to supporting students' emotional and behavioral needs while fostering a more positive learning environment for all.
For students who have experienced trauma, having a safe, quiet space to retreat to can provide a sense of security and control. It helps them manage their stress and anxiety in a non-threatening environment. If a student feels overwhelmed or frustrated, a calm-down corner can help prevent their emotions from escalating into disruptive behaviors. It provides a proactive solution to address emotional needs before they lead to bigger issues.
This project will create a clear seating area for the calming corner with a rug, sensory fidgets for students to use, calming strategies to reference, a sand timer to manage calming corner usage, and a weighted stuffy for sensory support.
Music class should be a safe space where all students feel they belong. This project supports our most struggling students with proactive support.
