Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work with high school special ed students in a Transition from School to Work program (TSW). This program is designed to help students with current classes when they need it ensure they graduate, and it offers them the opportunity to explore potential jobs. We help students identify areas of interests and their strengths. We work with them on creating resumes and building their experience through volunteering or internships. We connect them with potential employers who are willing to train and work with them to help them in their first paying jobs. We talk about the soft skills like face-to-face interactions, conflict resolution, and customer service that are vital to being successful employees.
Our TSW room is a safe space for students to come get help with classes, job research, skills practice and encouragement from staff who want to see them succeed.
Students like to come to our room to calm down or get support for stressful situations. We would like to have the beanbag chairs as a comfortable place for students to just relax and recoup. Living in Arizona, we would love to provide the small refrigerator to have a place to keep cold bottles of water or other drinks as we host students and staff in this room transition classroom.
