The requested materials will be used to support the increased levels of trauma my children are experiencing at such an early age. I never thought I would need to create a specific area in my room to meet the extreme social emotional/mental health of my children. I plan on creating a magical calming corner with a canopy covering. This will allow for the students to go into a safe space that is filled with finger puppets, picture books that show self love, hands on building blocks, and water calming wonder wands. The students will be able to either sit in a comfy chair or relax themselves on a yoga mat. Within this magical calming corner, the students will use unmindful mazes, build emotion friends that show how they are feeling when they first enter the corner, after setting a timer, the kids are free to choose the methods they need to re/center their emotions. They will write/draw/journal their before and after. They decide when they renter the learning environment. While writing in their journal, tue children can use their assigned headphones to listen to calming instrumental music or listen to one of the prerecorded texts to support them feeling great about themself. I will then talk to them, at the appropriate time, on how they processed/self-directed their emotions.
More and more, children are entering school with the need to learn how to self-sooth/calm/and redirect themselves through anger.
Creating a safe mental health environment is crucial as I continue to focus on teaching them reading, math, science, and social studies to the children.
