Help me give my students a calming corner to help students self-regulation while staying in the classroom if they need a break, feeling overwhelmed or just need a quiet peaceful place to de-escalate.
A calming corner in our classroom environment will give students a safe place to learn how to deal with being overwhelmed and process very strong emotions. Students in fifth and sixth grade are emotionally changing and are learning how to self-regulate their anxieties, fears and anger.
A calming corner offer students a chance to work and process emotions such as anger or frustration so they can work to overcome their issue and return to the learning activities.
At the calming corner, students will have a chance to identify their emotions, write down their thoughts and use breathing techniques to calm down. Students will be able to get comfortable in a bean bag chair, get a breathing strip to help practice mindful breathing, or use an anxiety toy such as a stress ball to help them relax.
Giving students options to de-escalate behaviors the correct way, will reduce classroom chaos, stress, and will help students build respectful relationships.
