Help me give my students what they need for a calming corner to help them monitor their emotions and find ways to keep themselves happy and at peace with their classmates
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a special needs teacher, I am always trying to find a balance between providing my students with direct teacher support and encouraging them to make their own decisions that will equip them with strong self-monitoring skills. Recently, I visited a school with a high level of special needs students. I was in awe at the calming corners they had in each room specifically designed for their students' needs. I knew this idea would work perfectly in my classroom. With fidget toys to allow them movement and a variety of sensory items all in one comfortable corner, I know my students will get the breaks they need to refocus or reflect on something that might have upset them during their day
As a special needs teacher, I am always trying to find a balance between providing my students with direct teacher support and encouraging them to make their own decisions that will equip them with strong self-monitoring skills.
With digital or sand timers and a list of options, students will enter the calming corner, set their own timer, and choose an activity that fits their mood. A comfortable bean bag chair that molds to their body, providing sensory stimulation will await them in the quiet corner, along with more sturdy back jack chairs if they need to be sitting upright. From there, they can choose an activity from the storage cart. Each drawer will be labeled according to what they may need, whether it's refocusing while watching the liquid motion bubbler, or relaxing by breathing steadily blowing the pinwheel. Taking the time to relax in a safe space, and reflect on what is causing them to lose focus or become upset, will equip them with life skills that are often more difficult for children with special needs.
