My Students

Muhammad Ali once said, "Impossible is not a fact, it is an opinion." My fourth graders know that this mindset is what it takes to do hard things like learning, growing, and overcoming obstacles in our lives. My students face obstacles every day, some before they even get to school. Obstacles such as many of them living at or below the poverty line, many are homeless or move frequently, most are receiving free or reduced-price lunch, and several students are English Language Learners and receiving additional resource services.

Despite all the obstacles in my students' lives, they show up, they want to learn, and they put forth the effort to grow every day.

I want to teach my students to fight through obstacles, develop perseverance and resiliency, and do things they never thought they could.

My Project

Everyone knows that children come to school to learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. But students also learn social and emotional skills as well. Students learn to name their emotions and feelings, how to deal with strong feelings like anger, sadness, and frustration, and how to work with and share space with other people.

I will create a safe, calming space for my students to use when they are feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or sad and they need a chance to refocus and be ready to learn.

They can use that space to identify their feelings, practice calming activities like yoga, deep breathing, or writing their thoughts.

Help me help my students learn how to identify and process their feelings and become more aware and mindful of their own feelings and emotions and those of people around them as well.
