Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a special ed campus. All my students are 18-22-year-old young adults with a variety of intellectual, physical, and sensory impairments. I teach social skills, hygiene, community awareness, public safety, and so much more. I am preparing these young adults for life after our program. I work with each student individually to help them communicate and reach their personal goals and vision for their future.
All of my students participate in our community-based instruction and worksite as part of their education.
We also practice interviewing skills, job applications, cooking, cleaning, money, time, and functional and writing skills.
Most of my students are looking forward to moving out of their parent's homes to live with them with minimal support. Some of my students might join a group home, work in shelter employment, and being as independent as possible. They are learning how to socially be accepted in the community.
My Project
My students are in a self-contained program with significant academic, social, emotional, and functional needs. We specialize in teaching life skills to students with a variety of disabilities, including Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Down Syndrome, and physical impairment. We target these unique learning needs through specialized instruction and support.
This calming corner with a hammock and sensory fidgets toys is exactly what my students need.
Some of my students are really stressed out due to hearing all the updates on the news with covid. I feel like having a calming corner in my classroom would greatly benefit them. We are also having to stay in the classroom more often so having a relaxing corner for them would be perfect!
