Help me give my students a calm down kit to help calm teach them how to calm their bodies and minds down to prevent themselves from acting out of anger.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a teacher at a Title I School in Tempe, Arizona. My school has a diverse population, with students from all over the globe. The culture of our school is positive, loving, and accepting. It is a place where students feel safe and supported.
Despite whatever their situation at home may be, they come into school with big smiles on their faces, ready to make the most of every day in the classroom.
Since my students have many different home situations, my school is sometimes the only place some of my students feel safe and secure. It is a place they can depend on for food, shelter, and consistency. However, my school can also be a place where students bring big emotions from what is going on at home as well. Since they are so young, they can have trouble regulating these emotions when something doesn't go their way.
Having a calm down corner in my classroom when my students are having difficulty with their emotions will prevent negative behavior, and help teach students ways to cope and handle the big emotions they might be feeling. With your support, in this kit there will be books and cards to help students identify any emotions they might be feeling, as well as strategy cards for things they can do to help handle those emotions. The picture books will help them feel validated and understood. The timer will help them take their five minute break and then get back to class so that they do not miss any learning. The fidgets will help their mind to focus on other things other than anger. I am so excited to implement this tool to help my students grow socially and emotionally, as well as academically.
