This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
We are a fully inclusive preschool classroom in Los Angeles, California. We have 15 preschool students (4 to 5 years-old). Inclusion means that students with special needs learn alongside same-aged peers without disabilities in the same setting. In preschool, children don't just develop in in academics, they also develop their social emotional capabilities: sharing materials, conflict resolution, persistence when something is difficult, and to identify, and manage emotions.
A soft and soothing calming area that offers tools to use for emotional regulation provides many benefits for preschool students.
One benefit is that these areas provide a separate, safe, and soothing environment where students develop emotional intelligence (identify emotions). The next is that students practice various calm-down strategies to regulate their feelings. Another is that students return to class feeling validated, calm, and ready to interact with peers and their learning environment. Calming corners teach students that emotions are normal, they provide structure to children, especially children with more rigid thinking (like children with autism), and is also an area where students learn from their mistakes.
A successful calm down area needs to be a place where students can separate themselves from the stressful environment, feel safe and comforted, and have the the tools they need to practice self-regulation strategies. A canopy with soft pillows, sensory manipulatives, books, and visual timers provide us the tools we need to create a successful calm down area for our preschoolers.
