This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are energetic and frenetic! They sometimes need help to look inward and calm themselves. They are victims of the Pandemic and need help readjusting to the norms of schools. This space will provide them with a time out that isn't punitive.

Our students' emotional development has been stifled and stunted by the Pandemic.

Some students have not learned to deal with their raw emotions nor the emotions of their classmates.

They become easily distracted, irritable, and angry. Fights and arguments escalate. Students must be provided the opportunity and space to deal with their emotions appropriately. By setting up a center in the classroom, I hope to promote the students' emotional growth and provide a "safe harbor". This small spot will change the ambience of the entire classroom. A space that is their unique space - where they are able to deal with whatever they might be experiencing at home and school.

The old "Time out space" has becomes a "tune in" space where students will experience a more serene comfortable space. Where students can "chill" "mellow out" or just congregate in a safe, warm environment.

My students deserve the best - they come from all over the city and have a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Some travel an hour each way to attend our school and I want that school to be welcoming when they arrive.
