Help me give my students a variety of sensory items for a safe space to practice the self-regulation skills they've been taught, while they are in the classroom, and so they can get back to learning.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have been a special education teacher in Maywood for over twenty years. I love what I do and the population I serve. I teach fourth and fifth graders with a wide range of disabilities. I have students with autism, learning disabilities, emotional disorders, and intellectual disabilities. For me, it has always been important to teach my students how to recognize their feelings and learn how to calm themselves.
This is why I am creating a safe, calming corner in my classroom in order to provide my students a neutral, positive space to self-regulate.
This calming corner will help create a safe space for my students to go to when they feel their emotions are overwhelming them and they need to regain their emotional and physical control. This space will be equipped with comforting objects and soothing materials that can promote mindfulness, breathing and reflection.
