This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
A calming area will allow students to take charge of their emotional learning and make the choices that work best for them to help calm them down in stressful situations. During the day, students learn strategies to help them with Social Emotional Learning and this area will be used through guided practice and independent time. Making sure students are successful starts with their emotional state. If students are dealing with personal things, they will not be focused on academics. This is essential component in helping them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students with the small area we currently have, but this new area will enhance the use of the calming area to reach all students.
After using the calming area, students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional options of flexible seating and strategies for their emotional wellbeing. The large rug will help designate the calming area while the floor cushions and pillows will allow students to sit comfortably while working on their calming strategy of choice. The comfy floor seats will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. They are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom during work time as well.
I have seen first hand how choice can positively affect my students work and demeanor and hope that the additional options will help them grow.
