Help me give my students supplies and activities to work on while in the library so they can have a creative outlet to relieve stress while working on a fun cognitive task.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a librarian, I've made it a goal this school year to create a more inviting space for our students to visit during their own time before school or during lunch. Many students already visit the library on a regular basis with their English classes to check out books but I wanted them to feel that the library was a place where they could get a break from the daily stressors of their academic classes.
The supplies that I am requesting will help create a few more table stations that will allow more students to come into the library to decompress, socialize, and work on a project that is a creative outlet for their stress.
We currently have a puzzle table where students can collaboratively work on completing one puzzle. We also have set up a coloring table with coloring pages and art supplies for them to use. Lastly, we have a table where students can work together to build a large Lego set that was donated to us. All of these setups are left "up and running" and different students come in throughout the day and spend some time working on each project. We also have a shelf full of board and card games that students can check out to use with friends before school or during lunch.
I've selected supplies that will allow students to create different types of friendship bracelets with beads and thread. I've selected colored sheets of paper and an instruction book to make origami art. I've also selected a few more LEGO sets, board games, and coloring supplies such as markers and crayons. All of these supplies will help to make the library an area that students associate with calmness.
