My Project
The overall goal of the calming area is to provide my students with a space in which they’ll feel safe recognizing and regulating their emotions in a healthy way. I work with students from kindergarten through 6th grade that struggle with reading foundational skills. They come to my class to get the support they need not only in academics but also in social-emotional learning. Many of my students who struggle with reading also struggle with managing their big emotions. Too often they are labeled or have the stigma of not being a "good student". They often feel angry, unheard, anxious, or have other negative feelings.
When my students learn to regulate their big emotions is when we can focus on learning.
I remind my students that when they enter my room it's a safe place to learn and be themselves and when they leave my room I want them to feel proud and confident.
One way to help my students learn how to self-regulate is by providing them with calm-down areas. My students will use this light table and the comfortable seating to build and draw to help them learn self-awareness and self-management in the calming area. Thank you for your support.
