In today's world, we ALL need a CALM CORNER . . . a place to be by ourselves so we can zoom-out from all the extraneous happenings that surround us and be able to zoom-in and be mindful of our own social-emotional health.
My kindergarten students need this special place in our classroom to do just that, as they are developing their social-emotional skills and learning to identify, name, and express their feelings through self-talk and through communication with their peers and adults who love them.
A CALM CORNER of the classroom will provide my students a place to take a break, to connect with their feelings, and to de-escalate using calming tools such as brain activities like mazes, sensory alphabet letter stones, and a sorting game for naming feelings and emotions. This CALM CORNER also needs carpet squares that are warm and inviting and that provides my students a place to sit and be comfortable.
