This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our school is a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Magnet school with a diverse population that reflects Los Angeles County. Half of my students ride the bus in from various parts of Los Angeles County. Most of our school receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students are motivated and diligent students.
I not only have an ethnically diverse class, but I also have a class with varying academic abilities. I have students who have been identified with special needs as well as students who demonstrate strong academic capabilities. My students come with a keen interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Our school's goal is to prepare every child to be college and career ready, especially in the areas of STEAM.
My project is focused on a creating a calming area in my classroom. The flexible seating stools will help students who need stools that allow for movement as they sit and allow them to destress and focus on the lesson. The rug will help me designate a space in my room that I will name as my calming corner. This rug will help students take a moment to recollect their emotions so they can return to class work quickly. Sensory materials such as stress balls, breathing balls, and play doh will provide my students that need tactile materials to destress. The storage bins will allow me to store our sensory materials for easy access. I have also carefully chosen books that address socio emotional learning to better empower my students to recognize their emotions and practice strategies to calm down so they can maximize their learning.
