Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In my role at the school site, I work specifically with youth involved in the foster care system, youth involved in the juvenile justice system, and youth experiencing homelessness. I share space with the Healthy Start Navigator who provides resources such as food, clothing, job assistance and more to our students and families in need. Needless to say but, the students that my colleague and I work with experience the usual teenage woes with some additional stress due to involvement in various systems, family stressors, community stressors, and socioeconomic status. Our youth are frequently overwhelmed and come to our office to vent about family life, peer issues, their emotions, and so much more.
While coming to our office to vent seems to be good for our students, we would also like them to have a space of solitude to calm down, process their emotions, and relax.
The calming corner will be their small safe space within the safe space that is our office. We want our kids to know that we care about them and their mental health.
