My Project

At the pre-k level, my students are just beginning to learn how to handle those BIG feelings. For many of them, my classroom is their first school experience. It can be frustrating when learning to share, wait for a turn, and work together.

Everyone needs a time out every once in a while!

However, a time out shouldn’t consist of punishment. It should be a time for reflection and restoration. This calming corner will provide constructive ways to help my friends to cope when they’re upset and transform their negative feelings into positive energy.

We will continue our discussions about emotions. The mirrors will be used to make faces that correlate with each emotion. We will consider the faces that make us feel good and not so good. When students get angry or frustrated, they will be able to sit on the beanbag and reflect on their feelings. They will practice taking deep breaths by blowing pinwheels or using the breathing ball. They will be able to take out a journal to write (draw) about their feelings. They will be able to use noise canceling headphones to block out the voices (very beneficial for students with autism). They will be taught to squeeze a stress ball instead of hitting. All of these materials and strategies will support social emotional development.
