This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My urban students get totally absorbed in the garden activities. They become different people: observers of the minutiae of the soil, the tiny bugs, the worms, the growth of the tiny seeds. They are in awe of the transformation of the seeds into real edible plants. They act as if they are the discoverers of this process.

"It smells like a carrot!" That's my favorite phrase when a child grabs a tiny carrot seedling, brings it to his/her nose and exclaims with wonder.

It's truly fun for them to witness the magic that growing vegetables is in their lives. And their wonder brings magic to mine.

My Project

Our middle school students have been enjoying our after school vegetable garden club, learning about the actual method of growing vegetables, the reasons to include vegetables in their diet, and appreciating the need for patience in observing the process from seed to table.

We need a small tool shed to store garden equipment on site.

We have accumulated a supply of tools like small shovels, trowels, and weeders. We have a collection of garden gloves, watering cans, planters, and hose attachments. Our garden is located about 300' from the side of the school building and we need to haul these supplies to the garden from inside the school for each garden club session.

A small shed to store this equipment on site will enable us to get right into the garden activity more quickly and will preserve the equipment for a longer period of time.
