My Students
Every child has the ability to be successful in school, regardless of age, race, ability or disability. I am a special education teacher that is part of the ASD Nest program for 12 amazing kindergarteners, all of who have their own unique qualities, talents, and strengths. Many of my students come from low-income immigrant families. These students each have their own unique set of challenges and they deserve a classroom that is conducive to their learning needs. My eager-energetic kindergarteners will enter the classroom ready to learn, discover, and explore.
My Project
My students often require sensory breaks to calm down and refocus their attention to learning. A sensory area in the classroom would provide the materials needed to help my students meet their sensory, and therefore, educational needs.
The selected resources will be available to students at all times and will make a difference in their readiness to learn.
If students are overwhelmed, they will be able to calm down in a cozy cube. My students need a privacy cube to add to our safe place when they’re handling big emotions. They can not learn academics without first feeling safe. When they have some of these big emotions students must be taught the appropriate ways to self-regulate. The cozy cube and the noise reduction ear muffs can be used to calm the students. If they are losing focus, the fidget toys will provide an opportunity for them to take a break from focusing on academics and engage in a mindless activity.
