My students need sensory supplies to support improving their ability to self-soothe and manage emotions when frustrations and/or difficulties arise in the classroom.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a school social worker in a low-income/high poverty school district, the daily challenges that my students face both at home and at school never cease to amaze me; however, they show up, they learn and they continue to grow into amazing individuals despite any hardships that might deter their success.
My students are resilient, full of strength and extremely adaptable to any environment.
Though my students may have emotional disorders, developmental delays and/or learning disabilities, they excel when provided with needed classroom supports. They thrive on positive attention highlighting their strengths and that reinforces their self-confidence in the classroom.
My Project
All of the students at our school, both special and general education, will be able to benefit from the supplies needed to aid in the creation of our sensory room. The school has designated a space for students to practice regulating their emotions in a room on the first floor of the building. This calm down space will be used to teach students to identify and choose sensory inputs/coping strategies to help their brain and body to relax.
By donating to my project, you are supporting a space to allow students to regroup, settle their minds and settle their bodies which will allow them to improve their focus, improve their behavior and support their success in the classroom.
All students will be provided with psycho-education to help them learn how to use the items appropriately and why they help them to calm down. The Heavy Weighted Blanket provides a physical calming effect to students who become emotionally dysregulated. The Body Sox provides deep pressure sensory input for students and increases their body awareness. The sensory ball and sensory set will provide tactile input for students via use as stress balls and fidgets to help calm down.
