My Project

Our students have been through so much in the past three years. These first graders have never been able to experience a "normal" year. They have been deprived of a typical in-person learning environment since preschool. As they returned to school, we have watched as students had to learn social skills for the first time in their lives while also being accelerated to make up for lost time.

With these resources, I will be creating a colorful, calming, and enriching “calm down resource corner.”

I will be using each item to create a space in my classroom where students can excuse themselves to when they are feeling disregulated, unhappy, or need a resource to support their learning. These items will help my students feel safe and welcome as they begin to navigate this new world. They will know they have the tools they need to be successful. The resources will help every student close the gap in an environment that is responsive to all they have been through. Color ink will allow us to print student selected self-regulating resources for this space. The cushions will be a resource that students can choose if their body feels like it need a a break from the chairs. Earphones will allow overstimulated students to take a noise break and work on intervention programs.

Students this year need more love, warmth, patience, and joy-bringing activities than in any other year of my career. These materials will help to make our classroom environment a space for students to meet their basic social and emotional needs so that we can fully access our academics and close the gaps created by lockdown. My goal is to fill our space with welcoming colors, smells, textures, and learning tools that help each and every student feel comfortable
