Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is small but mighty. We work with a socio-economically disadvantaged population and our school is ethnically diverse as well. Many of our students and families face barriers and obstacles in their daily lives and we are looking to provide a safe space mentally and emotionally for our students.

We have noticed as veteran school counselors that our students are struggling with emotion regulation, especially post-Covid.

We have seen this impact their academic success and ability to function in the classroom. We are hoping to use these resources to build "resiliency boxes" for each classroom for teachers and students to use for emotion regulation.

We will fill each container with the requested fidgets and other sensory items and provide staff training so our teachers are familiar with the protocol to use each item. We will also provide SEL lessons in each classroom that will support the use of resiliency boxes and educate students on various coping skills. Our hope is that students will learn self advocacy and assertiveness to be their best selves.
