Help me give my students a calm and peaceful classroom where they can learn academics as well as practice social skills and emotional regulation skills.
My students are in a resource special education classroom. I have students with varying disabilities and varying degrees of disabilities. My caseload is comprised of students with Autism, Learning Disabilities and Social and Emotional delays. Our school serves a rural area and many of my children come from economically disadvantaged homes. I am one lucky teacher because I truly teach the sweetest kids ever! I love coming to work and love seeing them make progress!
My students need a variety of flexible seating, games and classroom materials to assist in their learning.
My students have IEP goals that focus on self-calming and self-regulation skills. Further, these are lifelong skills that my students can use across the lifespan!
My Project
My students are in middle school and often have difficulty with emotional regulation. Since I strive to meet all of my students' needs, I try to provide a classroom that in calming, safe and allows for students to practice self- regulation.
Self-Regulation skills are goals for my students not just from an academic sense, but from a lifelong perspective.
Pairing a classroom that is inclusive, welcoming and safe as well as a teacher who practices Restorative Discipline leads to students who need less "outside of class" time to regulate their emotions and more in class time for learning.
Since many of my students are struggling learners as well, they need to be in class and have their needs met in the classroom rather than in an alternative location. The rug will provide flexible seating, the sensory toys allow students to calm down and the games allow them to practice pro-social skills.
