Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a special education teacher, I have the privilege of supporting my students with disabilities as well as supporting their general education teachers. Our school has approximately 544 students with 99% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. The staff at our school is trained on trauma informed teaching but our students have social emotional and behavioral needs that cannot always be met through our teaching strategies.
Calm down corners are an effective strategy for behavior and social emotional regulation in the classroom.
However, calm down corners cost a lot of money to build. They can also be difficult to manage because there is a fine line between calming down and escaping work to play with fidgets. Due to these challenges, I am requesting the materials to create calm down corners on wheels! One "calm down cart" will be designated to a specific grade level at my school who has exceptional challenges in self-regulation. The second cart is designated for the support staff in our building to use when they respond to behavior calls. As a school, we want to reduce the amount of time we are removing children from their classroom. We want to teach our students to use tools to calm down and self-regulate in their own classroom before transitioning back to their academic instruction.
We are excited to have the opportunity to provide calm down carts to our students. If this is an effective strategy, it is our goal to create calm down carts for each grade level at Merrick Moore.
