My Students
I teach an amazing class of diverse students who love to learn and are always excited to try new educational experiences. We are part of a Title I Early Education School in Brooklyn, NY, that includes Pre-K through grade 2. My incredible Pre-K class is made up of English Language Learners, some special education students, many different cultures, and lots of wonderful personalities.
We learn best by using our imagination and our hands.
We like to do hands-on work to encourage discussions, discovery, vocabulary, and keep us engaged. Working with partners and groups, we learn to problem solve and be part of a team. We create a learning environment that is interesting and allows us to build on each other's strengths.
My Project
Sometimes we have students who have a hard time controlling their emotions, especially after all of the stress of quarantining, learning from home and being in a classroom for the first time in a while!
I am asking you to help provide my students with a toolKit that helps teach kids emotional intelligence, regulation, resilience, and empathy.
In our class we sometimes have BIG emotions! One approach we have to help meet my students’ social and emotional needs is to try a calm down corner. A calm down corner, sometimes referred to as a mindfulness corner, is a designated space in your classroom where students can go when they need to regulate their emotions. Calm down corners are becoming known for their ability to help students implement social and emotional learning skills. It’s a little tucked away corner where students can have a bit of quiet and privacy and take a few moments to themselves to practice mindfulness techniques. A calm down corner is not complete without tools students can use to help themselves regulate their emotions. We have posters to help us take our emotional “temperatures”, remind us of calming breaths and some pictures to help us describe our feelings. Some students need to use tangible items to help themselves calm down, like squeeze balls, poppers, or cool water tubes. We are asking you to help
Give our class a toolkit with these relaxing tangible things.
