This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach French in an urban Chicago magnet school. This is only the second year of our new French program! My classroom is pretty bare right now, and students don't have a lot of seating choices: they can sit in their desk chairs or on the hard wood floor. This project is to provide some seating choices and create a calm & cozy reading nook for my students! We do a lot of independent reading: from our reading warmups each day to our class novels and free reading time. Many of my students spend an hour each way on the bus or train traveling to school and spend most of their day sitting in uncomfortable hard seats.
These flexible seating choices would provide my students an opportunity to rest, decompress, and choose where they work and who they work with!
It puts responsibility and mindfulness back in their hands and turns our classroom into a space where they can make their own choices. I would also be able to create a calm & cozy reading nook for students who need a chance to decompress or have some quiet time alone during their day.
My students deserve to be comfortable in our class! They often ask, "can we work on the floor?" despite not having any comfortable way to do so. The cushions, rugs, floor seats, and other items I'm requesting would help transform our room into a space where students can decompress, take a moment to self-regulate, and work comfortably! Help me turn my French class into a space for learning and self-care!
