Grants for Great Ideas: A Relaxing Space for Young Scientists

Help me give my students a cozy and calming space in my 5th grade science classroom with rugs, flexible seating, and soft pillows where students can relax, refocus, and re-energize!

My Project

My 5th-grade science classroom is a place of exploration, creativity, and discovery, but just like scientists in the real world, my students sometimes need a moment to step away, breathe, and reset. This year, I’m transforming one small section of my room into a calming corner that gives students a peaceful space to relax, reflect, or work quietly when they need a break without having to leave the classroom.

To bring this vision to life, I’m asking for your help to fund sensory supports, fidgets, washable rugs, flexible seating, and pillows to make the corner truly feel like a retreat and to give students hands-on ways to manage stress and regulate their emotions.

This calming corner will benefit over 65 students this year and continue helping future classes. When students regulate emotions, they engage more, collaborate better, and persist with challenging tasks. It ensures they return to class with renewed focus, benefiting the whole classroom community.

Students who struggle with anxiety, attention challenges, or low achievement will benefit from a designated safe space with tools that allow them to reset and then re-engage with learning.

Standards

HE.5.CEH.1.1 – Compare and contrast how healthy and unhealthy behaviors impact the community.

HE.5.CEH.2.2 – Investigate influences that change health beliefs and behaviors.

HE.5.R.2.4 – Devise an individual goal (short or long term) to adopt, maintain, or improve a personal practice.

HE.5.R.2.6 – Demonstrate how to positively respond to external influences

HE.5.R.3.3 – Demonstrate strategies to reduce stress, manage time, and balance responsibilities.

HE.5.R.4.1 – Demonstrate how to use self-control to avoid and resolve conflicts.

This project also indirectly supports Florida 5th Grade Science Standards, such as SC.5.N.1.1: Scientific Inquiry, which requires students to define problems, carry out investigations, and explain results.

This project is innovative because it integrates STEM learning with social-emotional well-being.
