Help me give my students a calm corner in our office where they can go to deal with their trauma. We hope to promote good mental health and strive to teach our children great coping skills.
My students are Pre-K to Eighth grade students in an inner-city school in the South side of Chicago. Our school student population is diverse but despite background differences, we have multiple things in common and have been able to develop a supportive community to attain our school mission and vision. We are one big team that includes students, parents, teachers, administrators and other school staff.
As the school social worker, it is my role to help our students learn and develop social-emotional skills that will help them cope with the difficulties they may be experiencing.
Sadly, some of our students have experienced traumatic events. Helping them verbalize and process their emotions related to their experience is often a difficult task. Sometimes this hard for them to do so I try my best by giving them a safe space in my office for each student. My goal is to provide a supportive environment for all students and make the process of working on their experience a fun and therapeutic process.
My Project
These materials will allow us to provide a supportive environment for all students to continue their social-emotional learning. Our students need and deserve a safe place to deal with their traumatic experiences and struggles throughout the school day.
With your help, I'd like to create an atmosphere that is both welcoming and enjoyable, is productivity-inspiring, and is a safe space where my students feel confident expressing themselves and being vulnerable to making mistakes.
The calm down corner will allow students to learn strategies to calm themselves down so they can return to learning in a better frame of mind.
Calm Down Corners will also have a positive impact on behavior referrals and teach students life-long skills of managing their emotions and thoughts.
