My Project
My students love sitting around the room during independent/partner work time and I love to let them! As 5th grade is the end of elementary school in my district, I spend a ton of time teaching them how to regulate themselves, and if "floor time" is what they need, they can take it.
Currently, our classroom has dingy green carpeting that is not inviting to participate in "floor time." A large area rug and carpet dots will help us define the space that is appropriate to sit during lessons so that students can still participate.
Additionally, we are working on becoming more collaborative learners. Anchor chart paper and markers will allow us to do "gallery walks" where all voices get to be heard.
Finally, we use personal whiteboards for all subjects. They allow me as their teacher to gain a better understanding of the concepts they do and do not have mastered as they can hold up their whiteboard for me to see from any place in the room.
Unfortunately, markers disappear, dry out, and get lost. Many of the dry erase markers we bought for our classroom earlier this year were already dry when we opened them and we are nearing the end of our supply. When we run out, students will resort to pencil and paper, but be unable to share their learning with me in that same quick cadence.
