My Project
My students are energetic, alive, vibrant human beings open to learning but coming in with all kinds of life challenges. For some it’s as simple as needing to make a friend or a little more complex learning how to express what they feel and to communicate what they want or need. And for some it’s the painful loss of a parent, homelessness, hunger, battles with parents' divorce, and the big quest to fit in or to be included!
This calm cool corner becomes their world, a reflective tool and space for them to be supported in being human and gain priceless tools so that they can surge forward in their learning and towards their goal and dreams.
These materials will truly create a defined calm and cool space and invite not only my class but at times other students who will need it as well.
We have calm cool corner supporter kids who with these added supplies like the carpet, floor seats, or huggable shapes can help facilitate engaging in these other activities to calm them and help them move forward. The beautiful calm colored carpet and chairs will let them know this is an important space to help them be the best human possible and give us a collective space to talk about calming and what blocks our goals and dreams and how we can help each other! We teach the students to come to the Calm Cool Corner, name their feeling, breathe and count back from 5, choose a snuggle buddy or activity to engage in or journal and share out with a buddy, then come back to the work space. We teach Todd Parr feeling card lessons where the kids look at cards and announce or act out their feelings. We also do community circle in this corner.
