it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Many of our new students have never attended preschool, have developmental and behavioral challenges, and are displaying difficulty coping with their emotions. The majority of our new preschoolers were born during the pandemic and have not had the benefit of extensive engagement with others and their community and, as a result, the behavioral challenges that they exhibit have increased to a level that regular classroom teachers and support staff have difficulty managing without the benefit of specialized materials.
All of us need ways to cope with our emotions and overstimulation when things get difficult for us!
Students in our at risk preschool program must adjust to a new environment when they start preschool for the first time. Many preschool students have sensory and emotional needs that require sensory cushions, weighted stuffed animals, chewing bracelets, and various toys to distract and calm them. We have many students who are waiting for special education evaluations and need these materials as strategies to assist them throughout their school day.
The preschool staff will be able to use these materials during the preschool day to help maintain their attention, keep children from biting themselves or others with the chew bracelets, and to distract and calm themselves with the calming box materials when they get upset and need help calming down.
These materials will be used to create sensory/calming boxes that any classroom teacher can use in their classroom within our preschool program for those purposes. I am asking my school district administration to assist with creating more boxes so that every classroom has one available for their students. My request will provide the minimum which is to have one available for each building that has preschool classrooms. These will make such a difference!
