it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Greetings from our vibrant 6th-grade classroom! Our students are not just learners; they are dynamic individuals who bring creativity, resilience, and intelligence to the table. However, like all of us, they have their unique set of challenges. Some of our students experience attention deficits and sensory sensitivities, particularly to fluorescent lights, which often lead to restlessness, eyestrain, headaches, and anxiety. We believe that a positive and inclusive learning environment is crucial for their success, and that's why we're reaching out for your support.
Our vision is to create a Calm Corner in each 6th-grade classroom—a haven where our students can take breaks to address their social, emotional, and sensory needs.
We want this space to be inviting and equipped with activities and tools that facilitate recentering and refocusing. The wireless LED lamps will provide customizable lighting, reducing the impact of harsh fluorescents. Weighted plush toys, accompanied by tote carrying bags and storage bins, offer a comforting and tactile outlet for sensory needs. The calming cards deck, diffusers, sand timers, and plants will create a serene atmosphere, fostering a sense of tranquility. Additionally, Bluetooth wireless headphones will allow students to listen to guided meditations and grounding music in the Calm Corner.
Our goal for this project is to create an environment where every student feels seen, understood, and empowered to succeed. What makes our students special is not just their intelligence but their resilience in the face of challenges.
