My Project
Magnetic light covers can help students by reducing harsh glare from fluorescent lights, which can lead to eye strain, headaches, and fatigue. By reducing the glare, we can improve their focus and concentration in the classroom by creating a more comfortable visual environment for learning; they can also be particularly beneficial for students with sensory sensitivities to bright lights.
Fluorescents emit brighter light that is higher on the color temperature scale, suppressing melatonin production and interrupting natural circadian rhythm that can lead to sleep problems.
A recent study presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics concluded that nearly half of the children in the U.S. don’t get the recommended hours of sleep, and while that has a lot to do with increased use and blue light of smartphones, prolonged daily exposure to traditional fluorescent lighting in our schools certainly isn’t helping.
Students’ visual comfort is an important aspect of the classroom environment. Factors that need to be considered in visual comfort include the availability of natural daylight and the amount and steadiness of artificial lighting and glare. Since fluorescent lighting does not produce the full-spectrum light of natural daylight, it can potentially trigger headaches, especially when exposure is prolonged.
The diffusing effect of the covers softens the light, minimizing glare and discomfort for students' eyes, especially during prolonged periods of screen time. The reduction in glare can help prevent headaches often triggered by bright fluorescent lights. We chose colors and designs (forests and blue sky) that will create a more soothing and calming atmosphere, potentially reducing stress and anxiety. Using light filters in the classrooms may improve students' focus, create a more productive learning environment, and decrease students' stress and frequency of their headaches.
