Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The majority of the items requested, a sandbox, laminator and headphones, will be accessible to the entire school population (500+) students. Most items will be kept in a large, inviting, room dedicated to social-emotional learning (SEL), emotional-regulation coping skills, and small groups. Other items will be distributed to several beginning teachers throughout our school. Our main goal is to establish a primary calm-down space with various sensory items, play-based therapeutic tools, social-emotional signs, and interactive, laminated sheets, and more. Another goal is to establish smaller "regulation stations" in each classroom for students to continuously practice strategies they have learned with familiar sensory tools.
These items will provide our students with items they can use that contribute to de-escalating heightened emotional states, reduce anxiety, and re-establishing self-control.
Additionally, they could help students stay focused or remain in the classroom despite behavioral challenges. The speaker is to help address a language barrier some of our students face. Through the JBL speaker we plan on leveraging technology to help bridge the communication gap with a high percentage of our non-English speaking students.
We are a Title I school with a culturally diverse student population. Many of our students face extremely challenging barriers yet still manage to show up to school and try their best. They deserve every method, technique, tool, and resource available to contribute to their overall success.
